GEAR is a trick-taking game where players are dealt 2 of the cards they will use in the hand, and they will bid points to determine the others. A number of cards are dealt into lots on the table, based on the number of players. The players then conduct an auction, using their victory points, to determine the remaining cards that will form their hand.
In addition to single cards, players may play pairs.
Points are awarded for winning tricks, winning a lot of tricks, taking certain cards, and winning certain tricks.
The player with the most points after a series of rounds wins.
